Dalit Man Brutally Attacked with Knife in Ahmedabad's Ranip Area
A shocking incident of violence unfolded in Ahmedabad on Saturday night, where a 25-year-old Dalit man was allegedly slashed in the neck following a petty dispute. The attack occurred in the Ranip locality, and a formal complaint was lodged with the Ranip police on Sunday, leading to the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against six accused individuals.
Details of the Assault and Casteist Abuse
The victim, identified as Sahil Vaghela, a resident of Purushottamnagar opposite Pink City in Ranip, works for a private company. According to his complaint recorded at Civil Hospital, the incident took place around 10:30 PM when he visited a pan shop near Bakramandi. There, he was confronted by a group including Shravan Thakor, Harshit Thakor, and four others.
The group allegedly questioned Vaghela about an earlier incident in his society and began hurling abuses at him. In a disturbing escalation, the accused used casteist slurs during the altercation, which quickly turned violent. During the scuffle, Shravan Thakor reportedly pulled out a knife and attacked Vaghela, striking him on the left side of his neck.
Immediate Aftermath and Police Action
As Vaghela began bleeding profusely, he raised an alarm, prompting the attackers to flee the scene. He managed to call his friends and a relative, who then alerted an ambulance through the emergency number 108. He was rushed to Civil Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
After receiving care, Vaghela was discharged from the hospital and is stated to be out of danger, though the physical and emotional trauma of the attack remains significant. The Ranip police have taken swift action by registering an FIR against the six accused.
The charges include:
- Rioting and unlawful assembly
- Voluntarily causing grievous hurt
- Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
- Provisions under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, highlighting the caste-based nature of the crime
This case underscores the persistent issue of caste violence in urban areas and the critical role of legal frameworks in addressing such atrocities. Authorities are continuing their investigation to apprehend all involved and ensure justice is served.
