Three Shops Torched in Daltonganj After Shopkeeper Refuses Late-Night Cigarette Sale

In a shocking incident on the outskirts of Daltonganj, three shops were deliberately set on fire after a shopkeeper refused to sell cigarettes late at night. The arson attack occurred during the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, causing significant damage and sparking a police investigation.

Details of the Incident

According to police reports, three to four youths arrived on a motorcycle at the house-cum-shops of Rajesh Kumar Gupta in Nirala Tola, Sua village. One of them demanded cigarettes from Gupta, who refused, explaining that he could not open his confectionery-cum-grocery store at such an odd hour. The youths left after shouting threats, warning Gupta that he would face consequences for his refusal.

Later, Gupta’s family discovered that the shops had been set ablaze. Sadar police station officer-in-charge Lalji stated that Gupta estimated his losses at around Rs 5 lakh in his written complaint. The police have registered the complaint as an FIR and launched an investigation.

Police Response and Investigation

The police are investigating the case under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with sections related to arson. Officer Lalji mentioned that while no specific accused were named in the complaint, police suspect a few village bullies to be behind the attack.

In a swift response, authorities have detained two individuals who are currently being interrogated. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and identify all perpetrators involved in this violent act.
