Dehradun Woman Dies in Mysterious Dowry Death; Husband Arrested After Gagging Incident
In a tragic incident in Dehradun, a 23-year-old woman died under mysterious circumstances late Tuesday night in the Nehru Colony area, leading to the arrest of her husband on Thursday based on a medical examination report. Kahkasha Alam, who married Shahbaz Alam in November last year, was taken to a hospital early Wednesday morning, where doctors declared her brought dead. Police revealed that shortly before her death, Kahkasha had called her family, informing them that her in-laws were allegedly pressuring her to bring Rs 50 lakh from her parents to purchase a plot. The call ended abruptly, raising suspicions.
Later, around 1:30 am, her father-in-law, Yasin Alam, called her brother, Salman Asif, to say she had fallen ill. Asif and other family members rushed to the hospital, only to be told that Kahkasha had already died before arrival. SSP Pramendra Dobal stated that during the investigation, it was found that Shahbaz had gagged Kahkasha by pressing a blanket on her face while she was asleep.
Police Investigation and Charges
"He then took her to a hospital to falsely show the death as a natural one, as she was already sick. However, when the doctors informed police about the death, noting she was dead at arrival, he panicked and fled from the hospital. He was later tracked down in the city and arrested. A probe is ongoing in the case," said Dobal.
Based on a complaint filed by Asif on Wednesday, police registered a case of dowry death under BNS section 80(2) against five persons: her husband Shahbaz Alam, father-in-law Yasin Alam, mother-in-law Khushnuda, sister-in-law Shabnam, and brother-in-law Sartaj. A dowry case was initially registered against Shahbaz and four other family members, highlighting the severity of the allegations.
