Dehradun Police Files Chargesheet in 72 Hours Following Public Outrage Over Woman's Murder
In a swift response to public outrage, Dehradun police have filed a chargesheet within just 72 hours of arresting the accused in the brutal murder of a 23-year-old woman in the busy Paltan Bazaar area on February 2. This rapid action stands in stark contrast to the usual process, which typically takes several days to complete.
Police Seek 'Rarest of Rare' Category for Stringent Punishment
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajai Singh announced that authorities will press for the case to be treated in the 'rarest of rare' category before the court. The accused, identified as Akash, will be produced for proceedings. "This strategic move will help ensure a fast-track trial, with the prosecution seeking the most stringent possible punishment against the man," Singh emphasized, highlighting the department's commitment to delivering justice.
Special Investigation Team Collects Comprehensive Evidence
The chargesheet was meticulously prepared by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted under the supervision of SP (Crime) Visakha Bhadane. On Thursday afternoon, Bhadane, along with other senior police officers including SSP Singh, visited the deceased woman's family at their residence to personally assure them of justice.
SSP Singh detailed the extensive evidence gathered during the investigation: "The SIT examined CCTV footage from the area and collected crucial physical evidence, including the weapon used, the accused's clothes, and shoes with blood stains. Additionally, statements from 35 witnesses have been incorporated into the chargesheet, which represents a significant aspect of building a strong case," he stated.
Background of the Case and Motive Revealed
During preliminary investigations, police uncovered that the accused had known the woman for approximately three years. The woman's family had previously requested his family to stop him from meeting her after discovering he was married and had a child. Following this, both parties agreed to cease all contact and submitted a formal letter to the nearest police checkpost to document the agreement.
However, police reported that the woman later severed all ties with Akash, which allegedly enraged him. Despite the agreement, Akash continued to pursue her persistently. On the day of the incident, authorities stated that the accused attacked her with a cleaver while she was en route to the shop in Paltan Bazaar where she was employed, leading to the tragic murder in full public view.
This case has sparked significant public concern, prompting the police to act with unprecedented speed in filing the chargesheet and pushing for a rigorous legal process to ensure accountability and justice for the victim and her family.
