Delhi Police Register Case Following Allegations of Racial Abuse in South Delhi

Police in New Delhi have officially registered a case after three women hailing from Arunachal Pradesh came forward with serious allegations. The women claim they were subjected to racial abuse and criminal intimidation by a couple residing in the Malviya Nagar area of south Delhi. The incident, which occurred on Friday, gained widespread attention after a video documenting the altercation surfaced on various social media platforms on Sunday.

Details of the Malviya Nagar Altercation

The confrontation reportedly took place at approximately 3:30 PM on Friday. At that time, the three women were having electrical installation work completed at their rented accommodation. During the course of this work, some dirt allegedly fell onto the premises of the couple who live on the floor directly below them. This minor incident quickly escalated into a heated argument.

The complainants, one of whom is identified as a UPSC aspirant, have leveled serious accusations against the couple, named as Harsh Singh and his wife, Ruby. They allege that the couple made derogatory and racially offensive remarks, insulted their modesty, and issued direct threats. While no physical injuries were reported from the encounter, the women have stated they suffered significant mental harassment and public humiliation as a result of the incident.

Police Response and Legal Action

Deputy Commissioner of Police (south) Ankit Chauhan confirmed that a case has been registered against the couple at the Malviya Nagar police station. The charges have been filed under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The specific sections invoked include:

  • Section 79: Word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman.
  • Section 351: Criminal intimidation.
  • Section 3(5): Common intention.
  • Section 196: Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony.

In the video that circulated online, a police officer can be seen attempting to diffuse the tense situation while several local residents look on. As part of the investigation, police officers have pasted an official notice outside the couple's residence, formally asking them to join the probe. An investigating officer stated that this step is a standard procedure to ensure their cooperation with the ongoing inquiry.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about racial discrimination and the safety of individuals from northeastern states in metropolitan areas. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the allegations made by the three women from Arunachal Pradesh.
