According to comprehensive data released by the Delhi Traffic Police, the overall landscape of traffic enforcement presented mixed results. On one hand, routine traffic challans witnessed a substantial increase of 31% compared to last year, with police issuing 11,179 such penalties on Wednesday alone. This marks a significant rise from the 8,521 routine challans in 2025 and 7,717 in 2024.
A senior police officer elaborated that these routine violations encompassed a broad spectrum of offenses, including flouting air pollution norms, using prohibited pressure horns, smoking while driving, illegally transporting goods in private vehicles, and various other traffic infractions.
Special Holi Enforcement Drive Shows Decline
In contrast to the rise in routine violations, the special Holi enforcement initiative demonstrated a notable decline in effectiveness. Police issued only 4,929 challans under this targeted drive, representing a substantial 32% decrease from the 7,230 penalties imposed during last year's special enforcement campaign.
"Of the 4,929 special drive challans, 1,204 specifically addressed drunk driving offenses," the officer clarified. "The remaining 3,725 penalties targeted other traffic violations including triple riding on two-wheelers, vehicles operating with tinted glass, riding without proper helmets, and various additional offenses."
Demographic Breakdown and Geographic Distribution
The data revealed concerning patterns among offenders, with two-wheeler riders accounting for over 900 of the drunk driving cases, constituting the overwhelming majority of such violations. This highlights particular vulnerability among motorcycle and scooter operators during festive periods.
Geographically, enforcement efforts varied significantly across Delhi's administrative ranges:
- Western Range: Recorded the highest enforcement activity with 969 challans
- Central Range: Followed closely with 884 challans
- Southern Range: Registered 857 challans during the enforcement period

This year's Holi celebrations resulted in 22 reported road accidents across Delhi, including four that proved fatal. While this represents an increase from the 13 accidents recorded during last year's festival (which included six fatalities), it marks a substantial improvement from the particularly dangerous Holi of 2024.
The 2024 celebrations witnessed one of the highest fatality counts in recent years, with 27 crashes reported, 14 of which resulted in tragic loss of life. Furthermore, authorities established 79 joint pickets in collaboration with local police stations, where specialized teams equipped with alcometers conducted systematic checks to identify and deter drunk driving.
