In a significant move to bolster prison security, Alok Kumar, the Director General of Police (Prisons), executed an unannounced visit to Hindalga Jail in Belagavi on Tuesday. The detailed inspection revealed pressing vulnerabilities at this sensitive institution, which houses numerous high-profile convicts and undertrials.
Contraband Smuggling and Infrastructure Challenges
Kumar emphasized that the aging structure of Hindalga Jail presents multiple security hurdles. A primary concern is the persistent smuggling of contraband items, including ganja, mobile phones, and SIM cards, into the premises. These prohibited materials are frequently thrown from outside due to the jail's proximity to a main road.
"Since the jail is adjacent to the main road, all kinds of materials are being thrown inside for inmates," Kumar stated. "Instructions were given to curb this completely by installing fencing. The police department has been asked to put barricades." This directive aims to fortify the perimeter and prevent external access to inmates.
Mobile Network Issues and Staff Accountability
Despite the installation of signal jammers, Kumar noted that mobile networks remain accessible within the prison, posing a severe security risk. He issued immediate orders to resolve this technical flaw and warned of strict disciplinary action against any staff members found complicit in illegal activities.
"If any inmate is found using a mobile phone, it must be seized immediately," Kumar asserted. "From now on, ganja, beedi, and cigarettes—nothing should enter this jail. All such activities must be stopped." His instructions underscore a zero-tolerance policy towards contraband and unauthorized communication.
Operational Improvements and Community Impact
During the inspection of the entry area, Kumar mandated several operational enhancements:
