Drunk Driver Drags Bike on Bengaluru Flyover

A terrifying incident of drunk driving and a hit-and-run shook Bengaluru in the early hours of Monday, leaving a young man lucky to be alive. An inebriated driver of a Toyota Fortuner SUV struck a scooter and then dragged it along for about one and a half kilometers on a busy flyover, creating a spectacle of flying sparks and panic.

A Nightmare Unfolds on Hennur Flyover

The horrific event occurred around 2:30 AM on March 18th on the Hennur Main Road flyover. The victim, identified as Mohammed Sadiq, a 23-year-old resident of RT Nagar, was on his way home on his TVS Jupiter scooter. According to the police report from the Hennur traffic police station, a white Toyota Fortuner, bearing registration number KA 05 MF 9899, slammed into Sadiq's two-wheeler from behind.

Instead of stopping, the SUV driver accelerated. The mangled scooter got entangled under the vehicle's chassis. For the next 1.5 kilometers, the Fortuner dragged the scooter along the flyover, with metal scraping against asphalt and sending a shower of sparks into the night air. Other motorists on the road were stunned and horrified by the sight.

Miraculous Escape and Police Investigation

In a miraculous turn of events, Mohammed Sadiq was thrown clear from his scooter upon impact. He sustained injuries but survived what could have been a fatal accident. Bystanders and other drivers immediately alerted the police. A team from the Hennur traffic police station responded swiftly.

The police managed to intercept and stop the SUV near Kalyan Nagar. The driver, identified as Syed Muddasir Pasha, a 28-year-old from HBR Layout, was apprehended. He was found to be in an intoxicated state. The authorities conducted a breathalyzer test, which confirmed he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

The police have registered a case against Pasha under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Motor Vehicles Act. The charges include rash driving, driving under the influence, causing hurt by a negligent act, and failing to stop after an accident. The damaged Fortuner and the completely wrecked scooter were seized as evidence.

Public Outcry and Call for Stricter Enforcement

This gruesome incident has sparked renewed anger among Bengaluru's citizens regarding road safety and the menace of drunk driving. The visual of a car dragging a scooter, creating a trail of sparks, has gone viral on social media, prompting demands for stricter punishment and more vigilant enforcement, especially during late-night hours.

Traffic officials have reiterated the dangers of driving under the influence and have warned of continued special drives against such violations. The case highlights the severe consequences of reckless behavior on the road, where a moment of irresponsibility can lead to tragedy. The investigation is ongoing, and the accused driver is expected to be produced before a court.
