Enforcement Directorate Launches Coordinated Raids in Major Banking Fraud Investigation
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) executed a sweeping operation on Wednesday, targeting approximately 20 official and residential premises connected to suspects and accused individuals in the high-profile Rs 590 crore IDFC Bank fraud case. This significant action follows closely on the heels of earlier investigations conducted by the Haryana State Vigilance and Anti Corruption Bureau (HSACB), marking an escalation in the multi-agency probe into one of the region's substantial financial scandals.
Early Morning Raids Target Key Accused and Associates
Federal agency teams commenced their operations in the early hours, with raids beginning around 6:30 am. Among the primary targets were the residences of prominent accused individuals, including Rishab Rishi and Swati Singla. The ED's strategy focused on confronting family members and individuals present at the locations during the execution of search warrants. At the time of reporting, raids remained ongoing at multiple sites, with officials meticulously gathering evidence and conducting interrogations.
Comprehensive Investigation Encompasses Multiple Sectors
The scope of the investigation extends beyond banking professionals to include colonisers, jewellers, and major account holders who allegedly facilitated the fraudulent activities. Specifically, the ED is examining individuals involved in opening accounts at IDFC First Bank and those who assisted in creating complex layers to divert or utilize the proceeds of crime. This multi-pronged approach aims to trace the entire network responsible for the financial malfeasance.
Digital Evidence Collection and Beneficiary IdentificationWhile a substantial portion of the evidence being collected consists of digital records, the agency is simultaneously working to identify the ultimate beneficiaries of the Rs 590 crore in illicit proceeds. The ED's objective is to reach every individual who profited from the fraudulent scheme, ensuring comprehensive accountability in this complex financial crime.
Parallel Investigation by Chandigarh Police Adds Another Layer
In a related development, Chandigarh police have registered a separate First Information Report (FIR) against the same group of accused. This case alleges defrauding of various agencies to the tune of over Rs 110 crore, employing the same modus operandi through accounts linked to the Chandigarh Smart City project. This parallel investigation highlights the widespread nature of the fraudulent activities and the coordinated efforts of multiple law enforcement agencies.
Origins of the Case and Initial Recovery EffortsThe case originated on February 23 when HSACB arrested four individuals, including one woman, after registering the case at their Panchkula unit. The investigation was initiated on the directions of the vigilance wing of the Chief Secretary's office. Remarkably, within just one day of case registration, the government successfully recovered the siphoned amount from the bank, holding the financial institution liable for the losses incurred.
The ongoing ED raids represent a critical phase in unraveling the intricate web of financial deception, with authorities determined to bring all perpetrators to justice and recover illicit gains in this substantial banking fraud case.
