ED Conducts Multi-City Raids in Money Laundering Case Linked to Accused Ashok Kharat

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has executed coordinated searches across multiple locations in Maharashtra as part of a money laundering investigation connected to Ashok Kharat, who faces serious allegations of extortion and rape. The raids targeted eleven premises in total, with five in Nashik, three in Pune, and three in Shirdi, marking a significant escalation in the probe.

Focus on Trusts and Associates in Financial Probe

The searches primarily concentrated on properties associated with trusts linked to Kharat, as well as the residences and offices of his close associates, including a chartered accountant. This move comes after the ED recently registered a formal case against Kharat to scrutinize his financial transactions and uncover potential illicit money flows.

Origins in Extortion FIR and Luxury Car Transfer

The money laundering case stems from an extortion First Information Report (FIR) filed against Kharat in Nashik. According to the complaint, a real estate businessman alleged that Kharat extorted approximately Rs 5 crore from him between 2018 and 2019. The businessman further claimed that he was coerced into transferring ownership of his luxury car to Kharat, adding to the financial implications of the case.

Political Connections and Allegations of Sexual Exploitation

Ashok Kharat has been accused of sexually exploiting women by falsely presenting himself as a "divine incarnation." The issue came to light when Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also oversees the Home Department, received a complaint regarding these activities. In response, Fadnavis directed the Nashik police commissioner to take immediate action against Kharat and others involved in the offences.

Kharat was subsequently arrested in the case, but the controversy deepened when several photographs surfaced on social media. These images showed senior ministers and politicians from the ruling party visiting Kharat or participating in rituals with him, raising questions about their associations.

Allegations of Oshno Jal and Call Detail Records

Further allegations emerged that senior political leaders procured 'Oshno Jal' from Kharat, a liquid described as having Viagra-like effects. The scrutiny intensified with the emergence of call detail records (CDR), which documented calls between senior politicians and Kharat, including their durations. These records have fueled speculation and inquiries into the nature of these relationships and their potential impact on the investigation.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has publicly acknowledged that the ED has taken cognisance of the case and is actively investigating Kharat, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter. The multi-faceted probe continues to unfold, with financial, criminal, and political dimensions under examination.
