Elderly Woman Critically Injured in Petrol Attack in Sonipat Village
A 65-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a group of youths allegedly poured petrol on her and set her on fire while she was asleep outside her house in Kathura village of Gohana subdivision in Sonipat district late Wednesday night. The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, highlighting concerns over escalating personal disputes.
Details of the Brutal Attack
The injured woman, identified as Rajo Devi, was initially taken to a hospital in Gohana. However, due to the severity of her burn injuries, doctors referred her to PGIMS, Rohtak, where she is currently undergoing intensive treatment. Medical professionals reported that Rajo Devi sustained severe burns on both her hands and legs, and her condition remains serious.
According to family members, the horrifying incident occurred around 11:45 pm when Rajo Devi was resting on a cot in the veranda of her home. Approximately eight to ten youths entered the premises, allegedly poured petrol on the elderly woman, splashed it on her quilt and underneath the cot, and then set it all on fire before fleeing the scene.
Roots in a Long-Standing Feud
Police authorities have indicated that the attack is suspected to be linked to a rivalry between two groups in the village. The victim's family has alleged that this assault stems from an old dispute that dates back about four years.
Sonu, the victim's son, provided context to the ongoing conflict. He explained that a library was established at the village chaupal for the education of children. During Holi celebrations approximately four years ago, some youths allegedly began dancing near the library while under the influence of alcohol. When they were asked to stop, an altercation broke out, triggering a long-running feud between the two sides.
Family members claimed that the accused have repeatedly picked fights around Holi and had earlier issued threats warning them not to celebrate the festival. They alleged that this latest, brutal attack was carried out as an act of revenge for the ongoing tensions.
Police Response and Legal Action
Baroda police station SHO Inspector Dharmveer Singh confirmed that a case has been registered against nine persons based on the statement of the victim, Rajo, wife of Chhajuram. The charges have been filed under sections 436 (mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house, etc.), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
This incident underscores the serious consequences of unresolved local disputes and has raised questions about community safety and conflict resolution mechanisms in rural areas. The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to apprehend all suspects involved in this heinous crime.
