Lokayukta Raid in Hassan: Engineer's 3-Hour Standoff Ends with Rs 6.8 Crore Seizure

In a dramatic anti-corruption operation in Hassan, a municipal corporation engineer engaged in a tense standoff for more than three hours, refusing to open the gates of his home as Lokayukta officials arrived to conduct a search. This incident was part of a statewide crackdown targeting nine government officials across multiple districts, including Bengaluru, Mandya, Gadag, Mysuru, Vijayapura, and Yadgiri.

Early Morning Raid Turns into Prolonged Confrontation

The spotlight of the operation quickly shifted to Hassan, where Lokayukta sleuths reached the residence of Sathyanarayana MC, an assistant executive engineer with the Hassan Mahanagara Palike, around 5:30 AM. Instead of cooperating, the engineer allegedly locked himself inside the house and remained silent, creating a tense atmosphere outside his multi-storey building.

Officers noticed a CCTV camera installed on the premises and used it to repeatedly communicate with Sathyanarayana, urging him to open the door. When there was no response, they escalated their efforts by climbing the compound wall and knocking on various doors within the building. Despite these attempts, the house remained firmly shut, leading the team to initially suspect that the engineer might not be present.

However, mobile location data confirmed that Sathyanarayana's phone was still on the premises, dispelling doubts and indicating he was actively avoiding the raid. As the standoff dragged on, officials considered calling a locksmith to force entry but first contacted his relatives for assistance.

Relatives Intervene to End the Standoff

The breakthrough came when Sathyanarayana's sister arrived at the scene and persuaded him over the phone to cooperate. After hours of heightened tension, he finally opened the door, allowing the Lokayukta team to commence their search.

During the raid, officials uncovered significant assets, including immovable properties such as houses, sites, and agricultural land valued at approximately Rs 5.9 crore. Additionally, they seized gold, silver, and vehicles worth around Rs 1.4 crore.

Disproportionate Wealth Exceeds Known Income by Over 200%

Preliminary estimates suggest that the total assets amount to Rs 6.8 crore in disproportionate wealth, which officials report is over 200% higher than Sathyanarayana's known sources of income. Verification of documents and seized materials is currently underway to finalize the findings.

Statewide Crackdown Targets Multiple Officials

Simultaneous raids were conducted at 42 other locations linked to eight additional government officials as part of this extensive anti-corruption drive. Key cases of disproportionate assets include:

  • Rs 3.4 crore linked to Shashidhar R, CEO of Singanayakanahalli Raita Seva Sahakara Sangha in Yelahanka.
  • Rs 1.8 crore related to Dr. HC Indresh, an associate professor at Veterinary College in Hebbal.
  • Rs 4.4 crore connected to Vasanth Valappa Naik, chief engineer at K-Ship, PWD in Bengaluru.

This coordinated effort underscores Lokayukta's commitment to combating corruption across Karnataka, with investigations ongoing to assess the full scope of illicit wealth accumulation among public servants.
