Non-Bailable Warrants Issued Against Former Maharashtra Minister Eknath Khadse and Wife
A special court in Mumbai has taken a stern stance, issuing non-bailable warrants against former state revenue minister Eknath Khadse and his wife, Mandakini Khadse. This decisive action came on Friday after the couple failed to appear for the crucial stage of framing charges in the high-profile 2016 Bhosari MIDC land deal case.
Court Rejects Exemption Plea Citing Vague Reasons
The judge issued separate warrants in two interconnected cases: one filed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) alleging corruption, and a related money laundering case. Both matters are being tried by the same court, which expressed strong disapproval of the accused's absence.
Their legal representative filed an exemption application, citing "personal difficulties" as the reason for their non-appearance. However, the prosecution in both cases vehemently opposed this plea. The judge concurred, stating, "The application is vague. It did not contain details as to which personal difficulty arose for the accused. The reason is not supported by any documentary evidence."
Judge Emphasizes Need for Expedited Proceedings in MP/MLA Cases
The court further noted that the accused were fully aware that the case was scheduled for the framing of charges. "As per the ratio laid down by the Supreme Court, charges in MP/MLA cases should be framed expeditiously. However, the accused remained absent without any valid reason. Hence, the application is rejected," the judge remarked, highlighting the judiciary's push for timely resolution in cases involving public representatives.
In addition, the judge dismissed a separate plea seeking an adjournment of the proceedings. "The accused did not produce any order from the High Court restraining this court from framing the charges. The reason provided is not satisfactory. Hence, the application stands rejected," the court declared, reinforcing its commitment to moving the case forward without unnecessary delays.
Background of the Bhosari MIDC Land Deal Case
Eknath Khadse, his wife Mandakini, and their son-in-law Girish Chaudhari are accused in a case that revolves around the alleged misuse of official position. The charges pertain to the purchase of land in Bhosari, Pune, which had already been acquired by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). The case has drawn significant public and media attention due to its implications of corruption and abuse of power at high levels of government.
The issuance of non-bailable warrants marks a critical juncture in this long-pending legal battle, underscoring the court's determination to ensure accountability and swift justice in matters involving elected officials and serious allegations of financial misconduct.
