Former Soldier Security Guard Hospitalized After Assault at Howrah Botanical Garden
A former soldier serving as a security guard at the renowned Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden in Howrah was hospitalized after sustaining serious injuries in an assault by a morning walker. The incident has sparked outrage and raised concerns about safety at the popular public park.
Violent Altercation Over Park Timings
The security guard, who is part of a team of former soldiers employed at the botanical garden, was attacked during a dispute over morning walk timings. According to reports, the designated hours for morning walks during winter months are strictly from 5:30 am to 7:30 am to manage the large number of visitors, particularly elderly individuals who frequent the park.
A few days prior to the incident, a youth was observed in the park after the designated time. When the security guard on duty at the gate requested him to leave immediately, the situation escalated rapidly. What began as a verbal argument quickly turned violent when the youth, identified as Soham Sharma, allegedly punched the security guard multiple times in the face and eyes while hurling abuses.
Severe Injuries and Hospitalization
The assault resulted in significant injuries to the security guard, including:
- Facial injuries requiring medical attention
- Eye injuries that necessitated specialized care
- A broken tooth from the impact
- Chest injuries from the physical altercation
The injured guard was promptly admitted to a private hospital in Howrah where he received treatment for his multiple injuries. The botanical garden, also known locally as the Shibpur Botanical Garden, attracts numerous visitors daily for morning walks and recreational activities.
Official Condemnation and Police Action
Devendra Singh, the joint director of the botanical garden, expressed strong condemnation of the incident. He emphasized that all security personnel at the facility are former soldiers who deserve respect for their service and current role in maintaining park safety.
"This incident is absolutely condemnable," stated Singh. "Our security guards, who are all former soldiers, should be respected for their dedication to maintaining order and safety within the garden premises."
Following the assault, an official complaint was filed with local police authorities. Law enforcement officials confirmed that:
- A formal case has been registered against the accused
- An investigation is currently underway
- Appropriate legal action will be taken based on findings
The incident has highlighted the challenges faced by security personnel in managing public spaces with specific timing regulations, particularly during peak visitor hours when enforcement of rules can sometimes lead to confrontations.
