BAREILLY: An FIR has been lodged under BNS Section 108 (abetment of suicide) against IIMT University administration following the death of a 23-year-old MBA final-year student at the institute's Ganganagar campus, police said.
Anu Gupta, a native of Saharanpur, was found dead outside the gym on the ground floor of Sarojini Naidu Girls' Hostel on Wednesday morning. Her body was discovered around 9:30 am by a hostel maid. Gupta's room was on the third floor of the building. She was rushed to a hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The body was later sent for post-mortem.
The complaint was given by the victim's father, Omkar Gupta, who stated that the University Administration was pressuring her, leading to this extreme step. SP (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar said no suicide note was found by either police or the family, and a probe is under way.
Student Protests and Allegations
Following the incident, nearly 300 students staged a sit-in at the main gate demanding action against the administration. Students alleged that the university had been harassing Gupta over pending fee dues and had threatened her with debarment.
"There was pressure on her to deposit money to avoid debarment, and that pushed her to take this step," a student told TOI. Another student alleged that threatening students with debarment and marking them absent to extract money was a common practice at the university.
University Response
University registrar V P Rakesh told TOI that the institution was extending full cooperation to the police investigation.
