Banda Police Nab Fugitive After Three-Decade Manhunt in Dacoity Case

In a significant breakthrough, the Banda police have finally apprehended a fugitive who had been evading capture for an astonishing 30 years in a high-profile dacoity case. The arrest marks the culmination of a relentless pursuit that spanned decades and involved multiple police teams.

Details of the 1988 Case and Accused

Police station in-charge Suresh Kumar Saini provided crucial details about the case, which dates back to 1988. A First Information Report (FIR) was filed against Munawwar, a 77-year-old resident of Syoda village in the Girwan police station area of Banda district. He was among 12 individuals accused of stealing a substantial quantity of iron during railway maintenance work in the Mataundha area.

The case progressed to the Allahabad High Court, where it underwent extensive legal proceedings. Tragically, during the lengthy course of the hearing, 10 of the 12 accused passed away. One other accused is currently out on bail, leaving Munawwar as the sole remaining fugitive from the original group.

Three Decades of Evasion and Disguise

Munawwar managed to escape from custody three decades ago, initiating a prolonged period of evasion. According to police reports, he strategically sold his house and property in Banda years ago and relocated to Madhya Pradesh. There, he lived under disguise, meticulously concealing his identity to avoid detection by law enforcement agencies.

The police had announced a bounty of Rs 20,000 for information leading to his arrest and formed several specialized teams dedicated to tracking him down. Additionally, the Allahabad High Court had issued a non-bailable warrant against him, underscoring the seriousness of the charges.

Dramatic Arrest Near Ken River Bridge

Acting on a crucial tip-off, the Girwan police successfully located and arrested Munawwar late on Tuesday. The dramatic apprehension took place near the Ken River bridge in Syodha village, Banda, bringing an end to one of the district's longest-running manhunts.

This arrest demonstrates the persistent efforts of the Banda police force in pursuing justice, even in cases that span generations. It serves as a reminder that law enforcement agencies remain committed to resolving outstanding cases, regardless of the time elapsed.
