Major Road Closures in Porvorim for Elevated Highway Construction

The North Goa district magistrate's office has announced significant traffic disruptions in Porvorim as construction continues on the elevated highway project. Multiple road stretches will remain closed to the public until March 19, affecting daily commutes and transportation routes.

Specific Road Sections Affected by the Closure

The closure impacts two primary corridors: the road from Damian de Goa to the Hyundai showroom and the stretch from Holy Family Church to O'Coqueiro Junction. These closures are essential to facilitate the ongoing construction work on the Porvorim elevated highway, which aims to improve connectivity and reduce traffic congestion in the region.

Phased Implementation of Traffic Diversions

According to the official notification, the traffic diversions or complete closures mentioned in Phase-II will only be executed after the completion of Phase-I. Phase-I involves the closure from pillar 16 near ODP road to pillar 20 near Damian de Goa, as well as the closure from pillar 16 to pillar 55 near O'Coqueiro junction. This phased approach is designed to minimize disruption while ensuring safety and efficiency in the construction process.

Special Provisions for Heavy and Essential Vehicles

Due to the steep ascent on ODP road from the Mapusa side, heavy vehicles carrying essential commodities will face restrictions and will not be permitted to travel on this route. To accommodate general traffic, authorities have decided to keep one lane on the existing carriageway open for all vehicular traffic proceeding from Mapusa to Panaji. This measure aims to maintain some level of accessibility while prioritizing the safety of larger vehicles that may struggle with the incline.

The district magistrate's office urges residents and commuters to plan their journeys accordingly, consider alternative routes, and adhere to all posted signage and instructions from traffic personnel. The extended closure period reflects the complexity of the elevated highway project, which is a critical infrastructure development for North Goa.
