Daylight Heist in Gorakhpur: Conman in Police-Like Attire Flees with Rs 9.5 Lakh

In a bold and audacious incident that has sent shockwaves through the bustling city of Gorakhpur, a conman executed a daring daylight robbery, making off with a substantial sum of Rs 9.5 lakh from an employee of a local jewellery shop. The crime unfolded in the heart of the busy Ghantaghar market on Friday, leaving residents and business owners alarmed at the brazen nature of the theft.

Details of the Robbery Incident

The incident occurred near the Mumbai Cloth House, situated close to the revered Kalibari temple, around 11.15 am. Sanjay Pal, an employee of RC Ornament, a jewellery shop owned by Baliram Jaiswal, was on his way to deposit the cash at a Punjab National Bank (PNB) branch located on Geeta Press Road. Pal was carrying the hefty amount of Rs 9.5 lakh at the time, a routine task for the shop's financial transactions.

According to police reports, an unidentified man, dressed in trousers and a jacket that closely resembled a police uniform, intercepted Pal. The suspect, leveraging the authoritative appearance, snatched the cash bag from the employee. In a cunning move to buy time and create confusion, the conman instructed Pal to bring GST-related documents, falsely assuring him that the money would be returned upon verification.

Escape and Investigation Efforts

When Pal, trusting the suspect's words, went back to the shop to fetch the required papers, the accused seized the opportunity and fled the spot. Eyewitnesses at the scene reported that the suspect made his escape on a motorcycle, adding a layer of swiftness to the crime. CCTV footage obtained from nearby shops has provided crucial evidence, showing two youths on a bike: the rider wearing a helmet, while the pillion rider had his face covered, likely to avoid identification.

Police authorities have launched a thorough investigation, beginning with the scanning of CCTV footage from the area to identify the suspects. The footage is being meticulously analyzed to trace the bike's route and gather any additional clues that could lead to the apprehension of the culprits.

Formal Complaint and Community Impact

Following the incident, the victim trader, Baliram Jaiswal, submitted a written complaint at the Kotwali police station. In his complaint, Jaiswal demanded strict action against the perpetrators, emphasizing the need for justice and enhanced security measures in the market area. The robbery has raised concerns among local business owners about safety during cash transactions, prompting calls for increased police vigilance in crowded commercial zones.

This incident highlights the vulnerabilities in public spaces and serves as a reminder for businesses to adopt more secure methods for handling large sums of money. As the investigation continues, the community awaits updates, hoping for a swift resolution to this alarming case of daylight robbery in Gorakhpur.
