Gurgaon Auto Driver Assaulted Over Refusal to Pay Illegal Parking Fee

In a shocking incident in Gurgaon, an autorickshaw driver was allegedly assaulted with iron rods near the IFFCO Chowk metro station on Wednesday. The attack occurred after the driver, identified as Rinku, a resident of Sukhrali village, refused to pay Rs 50 as an informal "parking charge." The victim claimed that the assault was carried out by an individual named Veeru, who is known for collecting money from auto drivers for using the parking space near the station.

Informal Parking Charges and Control Disputes

According to other auto drivers operating in the area, Rs 50 is collected daily from each vehicle to allow them to queue up at the parking area outside the metro station. A driver, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that this charge is part of an informal arrangement meant to regulate the line and fix fares for different routes. "It helps avoid disputes among drivers and makes it easier for passengers," he said. However, this system has led to tensions and allegations of exploitation.

The drivers further alleged that several autos operating from the stand are owned by Veeru and are rented out. They claimed that Veeru had recently approached the autorickshaw union near the bus stand in an attempt to establish control over the parking area. "He wants to assert dominance in the area. That's why he came and picked a fight with us," a union member stated, highlighting the underlying power struggle.

Police Investigation and Aftermath

Police officials confirmed that they had received a complaint regarding the assault and are actively investigating the matter. An officer noted, "The incident stemmed from a dispute over control of the parking space, which led to the assault." The injured driver, Rinku, was treated at a hospital and was discharged on Wednesday night, but the incident has raised concerns about safety and illegal practices in the area.

This case sheds light on the informal economies and conflicts that often arise in urban transport hubs, where unauthorized fees and control battles can escalate into violence. Authorities are urged to address such issues to ensure the safety of drivers and passengers alike.
