Hyderabad Canal Tragedy: Car Recovered After Plunge, Wife Found Dead, Husband Missing
In a heartbreaking incident in Hyderabad, a car that went missing late on Saturday night in the Nagarjuna Sagar Left Canal (NLC) was finally located and recovered on Sunday afternoon. The recovery operation yielded the body of the female passenger, while her husband remains unaccounted for, sparking an intensive search effort by authorities.
Details of the Tragic Accident
According to district police officials, the couple, identified as K Padma and her husband Pullaiah, were traveling from Kampasagar to Miryalaguda with their driver. The journey followed a medical consultation at a hospital. The accident occurred at Mukundapur during their return trip home, when the vehicle suddenly veered off the road and plunged into the deep waters of the NLC.
The driver managed a miraculous escape by breaking a window and swimming to safety. An eyewitness, who was riding a motorbike nearby, described the harrowing scene: "I saw the speeding car lose control and dive into the canal. The driver emerged and was struggling to reach the bank. I quickly extended a coconut tree midrib, which he grabbed to pull himself to safety."
Intensive Rescue and Recovery Operation
Police were alerted immediately after the accident. On Saturday night, officials mobilized swimmers and members of the disaster response force to begin search operations in the challenging canal environment. The efforts continued into Sunday, culminating at approximately 12:30 PM when the submerged car was finally located.
Using a crane, rescue teams carefully extracted the vehicle from the water. Inside, they discovered the body of Padma, confirming the worst fears for one of the passengers. However, Pullaiah was not found in or near the car, leading to heightened concerns about his fate.

With Pullaiah still missing, authorities have expanded the search operation. Police have alerted all relevant stations along the canal's path to monitor for any signs of the missing man, who may have been carried downstream by the current.
