Hyderabad Excise Constable Succumbs to Injuries After Brutal Attack by Ganja Smugglers
In a tragic development, excise constable G Soumya, who had been fighting for her life after being deliberately run over by ganja smugglers, passed away at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) on Saturday. The incident, which occurred on January 24 in Madhavanagar village of Nizamabad district, has highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement personnel in anti-drug operations.
Prolonged Battle for Survival Ends in Tragedy
Soumya had been on life support at NIMS for several days following the brutal attack. Hospital authorities confirmed that despite continuous medical attention and best efforts from the medical team, her condition could not be stabilized. Doctors reported that her blood pressure had plummeted to dangerously low levels, requiring high doses of medication to sustain vital functions.
The Fateful Incident That Led to Multiple Injuries
The tragedy unfolded when an excise team conducting routine vehicle checks intercepted a car suspected of transporting ganja. As Constable Soumya positioned herself in front of the vehicle to prevent its escape, the driver suddenly accelerated, mowing her down in a callous act of violence.
She was immediately rushed to a local hospital where emergency surgery was performed. Doctors had to remove her spleen and one kidney during the initial procedure due to the severity of her injuries. The following day, she was transferred to NIMS for advanced treatment capabilities.
Extensive Medical Interventions Prove Insufficient
The medical report revealed the extensive nature of Soumya's injuries:
- Severe liver damage requiring continuous monitoring
- Multiple rib fractures affecting respiratory function
- Significant internal bleeding that complicated treatment
- Progressive failure of multiple organ systems
As her condition deteriorated, Soumya underwent renal replacement therapy (dialysis) to support her remaining kidney function. Advanced life support measures were implemented, but doctors noted that her response to treatment remained limited throughout her hospitalization.
A Sobering Reminder of Enforcement Risks
This tragic incident underscores the significant risks faced by excise and law enforcement personnel while performing their duties. The deliberate nature of the attack, where smugglers chose to run over an officer rather than surrender, has sent shockwaves through the enforcement community.
The medical team at NIMS expressed their condolences while explaining the challenges they faced in treating such extensive trauma. Despite modern medical technology and dedicated care, some injuries prove too severe for recovery, as tragically demonstrated in this case.
