Hyderabad's Elite Police Canine Academy Graduates 76 Dogs and 105 Handlers
The Integrated Intelligence Training Academy (IITA) in Moinabad, Hyderabad, marked a significant milestone on Tuesday with the ceremonial passing out parade of its 25th batch of police canines and their dedicated handlers. This prestigious event saw a total of 105 handlers and 76 highly trained canines successfully complete an intensive eight-month training program, ready to serve in critical law enforcement roles across multiple agencies.
Diverse Canine Force Prepared for Deployment
The graduating class comprised a robust mix of canine breeds specifically selected for police work, including Belgian Malinois, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, German Shepherds, and Beagles. These dogs represent a strategic distribution across law enforcement bodies: 42 will join the Telangana Police, 30 are destined for the Bihar Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and four will serve with the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF).
The parade itself was a powerful demonstration of discipline, agility, and obedience, showcasing the remarkable results of months of rigorous conditioning and the deep, synchronized partnership between each dog and its handler. These canines are not merely pets but sophisticated operational assets, trained to perform essential functions such as tracking criminals, detecting explosives and narcotics, and supporting intelligence-driven police operations.
Senior Officials Hail Canines as "Silent Soldiers"
Addressing the gathering, Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Vijay Kumar lauded the graduating teams, describing the trained canines as the police force's "most dependable silent soldiers." He emphasized that these animals are frontline partners in crime prevention and detection, far beyond being simple companions.
Vijay Kumar reiterated the operational effectiveness of police dogs in modern policing, highlighting their indispensable role in complex security scenarios. He stressed that the unique bond between handler and canine is fundamental to mission success and expressed strong confidence that the newly inducted teams would substantially enhance the field capabilities of their respective units.
In his remarks, the ADGP also commended the work of the state's Intelligence Security Wing (ISW), noting that during high-profile visits, such as those by the Prime Minister, the Special Protection Group (SPG) frequently acknowledges the comprehensive preparatory security work already executed by the ISW.
Academy's Legacy and Advanced Infrastructure
ISW and Officer on Special Duty VB Kamalasan Reddy provided historical context, revealing that the training centre, established in 2004, has evolved into one of India's premier canine training institutions. To date, it has trained an impressive 919 police canines and 1,310 handlers from various states across the country.
The academy's excellence is further validated by competitive achievements; Reddy recalled that Telangana Police secured first place in both the 67th and 68th All India Police Duty Meets, winning gold and silver medals respectively—a direct reflection of the institution's superior training standards.
The facility boasts specialized infrastructure designed to maintain peak canine performance, including a 650-yard canine olfaction park for scent training and a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. These resources ensure the health, fitness, and continuous operational readiness of the dogs, supporting their demanding roles in law enforcement.
This graduation ceremony underscores Hyderabad's pivotal role in advancing canine-assisted policing in India, equipping forces with expertly trained teams ready to tackle contemporary security challenges with precision and reliability.
