Delhi Civic Authorities Demolish Illegal Structure Linked to Holi Clash Accused
Amid heavy police deployment in west Delhi's Uttam Nagar, civic authorities carried out a demolition operation on Sunday, targeting illegal portions of a house connected to one of the accused in the Holi clash that led to the death of 26-year-old Tarun. The action unfolded in the tense JJ Colony area, where local residents and Tarun's family have been vocal in their demands for justice, asserting that the demolition alone is insufficient without similar measures against other properties linked to the accused.
Heightened Tensions and Family Demands
The demolition has intensified emotions in the community, with Tarun's father, Memraj, and neighbors calling for broader action. They argue that the demolished property belongs to three brothers related to the woman whose accidental splashing with color during Holi allegedly sparked the violent altercation. Locals claim that multiple members of the extended family reside nearby, with one house adjacent to Tarun's home and the demolished structure situated at the end of the lane.
Memraj recounted the family's long history in the area, stating, "We have lived in this block for nearly 50 years. Earlier, their family had just one house here, but over time it has grown to nearly 10-15." He described the day of the incident, alleging that relatives of the accused intimidated them and prevented neighbors from intervening by locking doors from outside. "People think my son was attacked in the heat of the moment, but the fight had been going on for hours. He had nothing to do with the argument. He was called there later to come save us while we were all locked inside and specifically targeted," Memraj emphasized.
Police Action and Ongoing Investigations
In response to the clash, police have arrested another individual identified as Imran, bringing the total number of arrests to seven. However, family members of the victim are pushing for more comprehensive measures. One relative stated, "All the houses belonging to those involved should be demolished and more arrests made. What will happen when the police leave and the barricades are removed? Everyone who played a role, including the woman involved in the argument, should be arrested. At least 20-25 more people were part of the attack, not just seven or eight."
Official Statement on Demolition
An MCD official clarified that the demolition was specifically targeted at the illegal portion of the structure. "The part built over the drain has been removed. Water used to accumulate there, especially during the monsoon. Only the encroached section has been demolished, and similar action may continue in other areas as well," the official explained. This operation follows a statement by CM Rekha Gupta on social media platform X, where she affirmed, "Strict and exemplary action will be taken in this case, so that no one dares to commit such an inhumane act in the future."
The situation remains volatile in Uttam Nagar, with authorities balancing enforcement actions against illegal constructions with the need to address community grievances and ensure justice in the wake of Tarun's tragic death.
