Inspector Jagdish Prasad, Two Months From Retirement, Dies in Surajkund Mela Rescue Operation

In a tragic incident at the Surajkund International Crafts Mela in Faridabad, Inspector Jagdish Prasad, a 57-year-old police officer, lost his life while rescuing people trapped on a malfunctioning electric swing. The officer, who was just two months away from his scheduled retirement on March 31, succumbed to fatal head and facial injuries when the swing structure collapsed completely during the rescue effort on Saturday.

A Distinguished Career Cut Short

Inspector Prasad, a native of Mathura, had a long and commendable career in the Haryana Police, spanning over three decades. He joined the force in 1989 as a constable and served across various districts including Rohtak and Kaithal, spending nearly 25 years at the Madhuban police complex. His dedication and integrity were recognized with the prestigious President's Medal, awarded for his courageous and honest service.

Recently transferred from Sonipat to Palwal on November 25 last year, Prasad was appointed as the Station House Officer of Chandhut police station a month later. In preparation for his superannuation, he had been moved to the police lines and replaced as SHO. Despite this transition, he remained committed to duty, assigned to the Surajkund Mela on January 31 and placed in charge of the amusement rides area.

The Fatal Rescue Attempt

On Saturday, the electric swing at the fair malfunctioned, tilting dangerously with several riders trapped. Inspector Prasad immediately rushed to assist in the rescue operation. Moments later, the structure collapsed entirely, striking him and causing the injuries that proved fatal. Colleagues described him as a committed officer who consistently prioritized duty over personal safety, a trait evident in his final actions.

Family and Official Response

Inspector Prasad is survived by his wife, a son, and two daughters. His son, Gaurav, expressed pride in his father's dedication, stating, "We are very proud of him. He was always dedicated to his duty and laid down his life while rescuing others. He received the President's Medal for his honest and brave service."

Haryana Cabinet Minister Arvind Sharma expressed deep grief over the incident, noting that Inspector Prasad "sacrificed his life while rescuing people trapped in the jhula" as it fell out of control. He announced that orders have been issued for a thorough inquiry, with strict action to be taken against those responsible. In recognition of his sacrifice, the Haryana Police has announced a compensation of Rs 1 crore for Prasad's family.

Additional Injuries and Aftermath

Two women police personnel were also injured during the rescue operation and are currently undergoing treatment. The incident has highlighted the risks faced by law enforcement officers in emergency situations, underscoring the bravery of those like Inspector Prasad who serve until their last breath.

This tragic event marks the end of a storied career, leaving behind a legacy of courage and selflessness that will be remembered by the community and his colleagues in the Haryana Police force.
