ISI Kolkata Takes Action Against Hate Graffiti in Hostel

Prestigious Kolkata Institute Rocked by Hate Graffiti Incident

The Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) in Kolkata has been shaken by the discovery of hateful graffiti at its main boys' hostel, C V Raman Hall. Institute authorities have issued a strong condemnation and warned of severe legal action against those responsible for what they described as "derogatory comments" targeting members of a particular community.

Administration's Strong Response

In an official notice circulated by the administration and signed by B Pradhan, Dean of Studies, the institution reaffirmed its commitment to foundational values of unity and respect. "ISI is founded on the principles of inclusivity, mutual respect, harmony, and diversity," the notice stated emphatically.

The administration made it clear that the use of language promoting hatred, discrimination or disharmony based on religion, caste or community represents a direct violation of the institute's core values and established code of conduct. The notice described the act as creating a hostile environment that tarnishes the reputation of the prestigious institution.

Timing and Broader Context

The disturbing discovery came just one day after a devastating car explosion in Delhi that killed at least 13 people and injured over a dozen others. The high-intensity blast occurred in a slow-moving Hyundai i20 car near the Red Fort on Monday evening.

Subsequent investigations led by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) have treated the Delhi incident as a terror attack. The probe focuses on the driver, identified as Dr Umar Un Nabi, a doctor from Pulwama, who is suspected to have been the occupant of the explosive-laden vehicle. The government has officially classified the incident as a "terrorist incident" with investigations pointing to an alleged wider terror module.

Institute's Commitment to Action

The ISI administration stressed that any activity implying discrimination based on caste, religion, gender or having the potential to affect the harmonious academic environment is unacceptable and must be denounced unequivocally. "The Institute strongly condemns this incident in the strongest possible terms," stated the Dean of Studies.

In their commitment to resolve the matter, institute authorities confirmed that ISI will cooperate with law enforcement agencies and take strict action in accordance with the law against perpetrators. The administration emphasized that such acts not only hurt community sentiments but also attempt to disrupt the social fabric of the educational institution.

The notice concluded with a reaffirmation of the institute's dedication to maintaining an environment free from discrimination and hostility, where all students can pursue academic excellence without fear or prejudice.
