Jaipur Police Launch Crackdown on Unauthorized Car Rental Agencies
In a significant move to curb criminal activities involving hired vehicles, the Jaipur police have taken decisive action against unauthorized car rental agencies operating in the city. Authorities have filed First Information Reports (FIRs) against eight such agencies that were found to be functioning without proper registration from the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and lacking valid trade licenses from the Jaipur Municipal Corporation.
Rising Criminal Incidents Prompt Police Action
The police action comes in response to a concerning pattern of crimes where rental cars were reportedly used in various illegal activities. Rajeev Pachar, the Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), highlighted this growing issue, stating that recent cases have demonstrated the vulnerability of the current rental system to criminal exploitation.
"There have been recent cases where rental cars were used in criminal activities," Pachar confirmed, emphasizing the need for stricter regulation and oversight of the car rental industry in Jaipur.
Comprehensive Investigation and Guidelines Implementation
The crackdown follows a series of strategic measures initiated by police authorities. In December 2025, Pachar formulated comprehensive guidelines specifically targeting owners of rent-a-cab agencies. These guidelines established clear operational standards and compliance requirements for all legitimate rental service providers.
Following the implementation of these guidelines, the city police launched an extensive investigation into the operations of various car rental agencies. The traffic police department played a crucial role in this operation, forming thirteen specialized teams on January 29 to conduct thorough checks and assessments.
Undercover Operations Reveal Regulatory Violations
Sumeet Meharda, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), detailed the methodology employed during the investigation. "Traffic police formed 13 teams on Jan 29 and these contacted operators as prospective customers," Meharda explained. "Officers conducted checks on the rented vehicles, drivers, and operators. We managed to zero in on eight agencies."
The undercover approach allowed police to identify agencies that were operating without the necessary legal permissions and documentation. The investigation revealed that these eight agencies had been conducting business without the mandatory RTO registration and Jaipur Municipal Corporation trade licenses, making them unauthorized operators in the city.
