Jharkhand High Court Demands Action Over Police Assault on Missing Girl's Relative
The Jharkhand High Court issued a stern rebuke to Director General of Police Tadasha Mishra on Tuesday, addressing allegations of police brutality against a relative of a woman whose daughter has been missing since 2025. The court's sharp criticism came during a hearing where it questioned why criminal proceedings should not be initiated against Bokaro Superintendent of Police Harvinder Singh for his involvement in the incident.
Court's Strong Stance on Custodial Violence
A division bench led by Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad was presiding over a habeas corpus petition filed by Rekha Devi, a resident of Bokaro. Devi's legal representative informed the court that her uncle-in-law was forcibly taken into custody by Bokaro police and subjected to severe torture. As a result of the assault, the victim sustained serious injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment at a private hospital in Ranchi.
The bench, after reviewing the case in the morning session, ordered DGP Mishra to appear before it at 3:30 pm. Mishra complied by joining the proceedings via virtual mode, where the court directly challenged her on the failure to pursue criminal charges against SP Harvinder Singh for the assault on the petitioner's relative.
Judicial Directions and Upcoming Hearing
Expressing clear frustration and annoyance at the handling of the matter, the court directed Mishra to submit a comprehensive and detailed report concerning the assault on the victim. This report must outline the circumstances of the incident, the actions taken by police officials, and any disciplinary measures implemented thus far.
Furthermore, the High Court has mandated that DGP Tadasha Mishra reappear before the bench on April 9, 2025, to present this report in person. This follow-up hearing will allow the court to assess the progress made in addressing the allegations and ensuring accountability within the police force.
