Prayagraj: Junior doctors at Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital went on strike on Monday to protest the alleged detention of a junior doctor by police in Rampur district. The resident doctors closed the outpatient departments (OPDs) and boycotted work in the emergency ward.
Details of the Protest
President of the Resident Doctors Association, Prayagraj, Dr. Nipendra, told TOI: "When resident doctors came to know that a group of policemen allegedly picked up one of their colleagues from his house in Rampur on May 20 without any information or warrant, they appealed to the local administration and police to find out the exact cause. We decided to go on strike as both police and administration failed to reply."
He added that all resident doctors were assured that there would be a fair probe into the incident, but instead, 20 resident doctors were placed under suspension.
Impact on Medical Services
The strike by the resident doctors crippled medical services at Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital. Senior doctors also left the premises. Following the strike, numerous patients who had traveled to SRN Hospital from the city and remote areas had no other option but to return home disappointed.
Bina, a resident of Chitrakoot, who arrived at SRN Hospital to seek treatment in the orthopedic department, had to return empty-handed.
