A horrific road accident on the Kalyan-Murbad highway on Monday morning resulted in the deaths of eleven individuals, leaving a trail of grief and shattered families across the region. The collision, involving a shared taxi, has underscored critical concerns about road safety and the profound human cost of such incidents.
A Widow's Unimaginable Loss: Three Children Perish
Among the most heart-wrenching stories is that of Anjana Mohape, a domestic worker and widow residing in Diva. The accident claimed the lives of three of her five children: daughters Neha, 19, and Mansi, 22, and her 15-year-old son, Prathamesh. This tragedy compounds a family history of loss, as Anjana's husband, Laxman, succumbed to cancer five years ago, leaving her to single-handedly raise their children.
Since her husband's passing, Anjana has worked tirelessly in multiple households to support her family and fund her children's education. Her resilience was focused on providing a future for her offspring. One daughter is married, while the other four were actively pursuing their studies. Neha had recently completed her Class 12 examinations, Mansi was a graduate, and Prathamesh had just taken his SSC board exams.
On the fateful Monday morning, the three siblings were traveling to their native village in Murbad for Mansi and Prathamesh's summer vacation. They had taken a train from Diva to Kalyan and then boarded the shared taxi for the final leg of their journey—a trip that ended in catastrophe.
Mahesh Mohape, Prathamesh's cousin who identified the bodies at Goveli, expressed the family's profound shock. "Five years ago, we lost my uncle to cancer. Since then, my aunt has been working tirelessly to raise and educate all five children. This is an unimaginable tragedy for us," he stated, highlighting the double blow suffered by the family.
Other Families Ravaged by the Accident
The accident's impact extended far beyond the Mohape family, devastating multiple households and stripping them of their primary earners.
- Ganpati Madhe, a farmer from Murbad, was killed while returning home after purchasing medicines for his wife in Kalyan. A relative, Devaki, voiced the family's despair: "He was the sole earning member of the family. Now, who will take care of them?" This sentiment echoes the financial uncertainty now facing many survivors.
- Deepak Gavli, 26, a resident of Tisgaon in Kalyan who worked in the recovery section of a private bank, was traveling to Murbad for work. At the Goveli primary health centre, his mother was inconsolable. Relatives noted that Deepak lived with his parents and younger brother and was the family's key financial support.
- Bhushan Ghorpade, 49, a revenue assistant at the Murbad tehsildar's office, also lost his life. Ghorpade typically spent weekdays in Murbad for work and weekends with his wife and two children at their Andheri residence. He was en route to duty when the accident occurred.
Authorities have yet to identify two of the deceased, as no identity documents, address proof, or mobile phones were found with them, adding another layer of anguish to the incident.
