Kanpur Court Delivers Life Sentences in 2021 Village Attack Case
In a significant ruling, the Additional District and Sessions Court/Special Court (Dacoity) in Kanpur has handed down life imprisonment sentences to five individuals, including a father and his sons, for their involvement in a violent attack that resulted in the death of one youth and injuries to two of his brothers. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 9,000 on each of the convicted persons.
Details of the Fatal Incident
The tragic event unfolded on the morning of November 27, 2021, in Mawai village, located within the Rath area of Kanpur. According to the prosecution, the attack stemmed from a long-standing enmity between the families involved. Brothers Arjun, Dharampal, and Sarovar were working in a field when they were brutally assaulted with axes, sickles, and sticks by a group of assailants.
Additional District Government Counsel Manikaran Shukla provided a detailed account of the incident. He stated that Chandrakaran, a resident of Mawai village and brother of the victims, filed a complaint at the local police station on the same day. Chandrakaran alleged that his brothers were attacked while they were residing in a house built on the field.
The attack occurred around 10:00 AM when Chandrakaran, along with his brother Braj Kishor and another individual named Ravindra from Dhamna village, were on their way to deliver food to the brothers in the field. Upon arrival, they witnessed the assault and challenged the attackers, who then fled the scene.
Legal Proceedings and Court Verdict
The Rath police promptly registered a case against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code, including murder, attempt to murder, and rioting, based on Chandrakaran's complaint. A charge sheet was subsequently filed in court, leading to the commencement of hearings before an additional district and sessions judge.
After a thorough examination of the evidence and arguments presented by the prosecution, Special Judge (Dacoity) Anil Kumar Kharwar delivered a verdict on February 21. The court found the following individuals guilty of murder and attempt to murder:
- Ram Kishori
- Her sons: Dhirendra alias Dheer Singh, Veer Singh, and Rambharat
- Rambharat's son: Shatrughan Singh
Notably, Sampatrani, Ram Kishori's wife, was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. Additionally, Ram Kishori's third son, Arvind, passed away during the course of the legal proceedings.
In the final hearing held on Tuesday, the court sentenced all five convicted individuals to life imprisonment. Each of them was also ordered to pay a fine of Rs 9,000, underscoring the severity of their crimes.
Aftermath of the Attack
The victims of the assault suffered severe injuries and were rushed to a hospital with police assistance. Tragically, Arjun succumbed to his wounds while en route to the medical facility. Dharampal and Sarovar were admitted to a hospital in Jhansi for treatment, highlighting the brutal nature of the attack.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of violent disputes and the judiciary's role in delivering justice. The court's decision to impose life sentences reflects a firm stance against such heinous acts, aiming to deter similar incidents in the future.
