Kanpur Apartment Fire Ignited by Toppled Temple Lamp, No Injuries Reported
A significant fire erupted in a fifth-floor apartment at Sai Villa in Govindnagar, Kanpur, during the early hours of Monday morning. The blaze originated when a lamp placed in a home temple toppled over, according to official statements from local authorities.
Rapid Spread and Swift Response
The initial flames quickly spread to a nearby wooden wardrobe and bed within the room before eventually reaching the rooftop of the residential building. Fortunately, no casualties or injuries were reported despite the intensity of the fire.
Alert residents in the vicinity immediately notified both the Govindnagar police station and the local fire brigade upon spotting the flames. This prompt action facilitated a rapid emergency response.
Firefighting Efforts and Evacuation
Three fire brigade vehicles were dispatched to the scene and managed to control the blaze within approximately one hour of arrival. Chief Fire Officer Deepak Sharma confirmed that three fire units, led by the CFO Kanpur, arrived after receiving the alert, extinguished the fire completely, and safely evacuated all occupants from the building.
Residents also alerted the mini control room in Fazalganj, which coordinated the arrival of three fire trucks from the Fazalganj and Kidwai Nagar fire stations to assist in firefighting operations.
Resident Account and Cause of Fire
Rajiv Chopra, a resident of the fifth-floor apartment in Sai Villa's H Block, provided details about the incident. He explained that his family, including his son Abhijit, daughter Rashika, mother Shakuntala Rani, and sister Shashiwal, were at home at the time.
Chopra revealed that the fire started when a burning lamp in their wooden home temple fell over, reportedly due to a mouse disturbing it. This ignited the adjacent wooden wardrobe, leading to the rapid spread of flames throughout the room.
He added that his brother-in-law Manoj Kumar from Dabauli had passed away recently, and he was planning to travel to Dabauli with his wife Neelima on Monday morning when the fire occurred.
Safety Measures and Community Alertness
The incident highlights the importance of fire safety precautions in residential settings, particularly regarding open flames in home temples. The combined efforts of vigilant neighbors, prompt police notification, and efficient fire brigade response prevented what could have been a more severe disaster.
Authorities have emphasized the need for residents to ensure proper placement and security of religious lamps and other potential fire hazards within their homes to prevent similar incidents in the future.
