Kanpur Police Arrest Impostor Posing as District Magistrate in Major Fraud Case

In a shocking incident from Kanpur, the Kalyanpur police have arrested an impostor late on Wednesday for allegedly sexually exploiting a woman and defrauding her of lakhs of rupees by posing as the district magistrate. The arrest follows a detailed investigation into a complaint filed by the victim, who fell prey to the accused's elaborate deception.

Details of the Fraudulent Scheme

According to police reports, the accused presented a fake appointment letter claiming he was the DM of Kanpur. Using this false identity, he managed to extract Rs 26.50 lakh along with gold and silver jewellery from the woman, promising to marry her. The victim, in her complaint, revealed that she first met the accused on January 16, when he introduced himself as a field officer of a government bank and befriended her.

Over time, the accused escalated his deceit by proposing marriage. Shortly after, he falsely informed her of his selection for the post of Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and later his appointment as the District Magistrate of Kanpur. To lend credibility to his claims, he sent her fake selection documents and a government department email ID via WhatsApp on her mobile phone.

Victim's Allegations and Police Action

The woman alleged that after taking the money and jewellery, the accused distanced himself, leading her to realise she had been duped. She promptly filed a First Information Report (FIR) against the accused and three others. DCP West SM Qasim Abidi stated, "After lodging an FIR, the police launched a search for him." The complaint also included accusations of sexual harassment under the pretext of marriage promises, resulting in relevant sections being added to the FIR.

Based on surveillance and informer's information, the police successfully arrested the accused from the Kalyanpur area late on Wednesday night. This swift action highlights the police's commitment to addressing such serious crimes in the region.

Broader Implications and Community Impact

This case underscores the growing concerns over impersonation and fraud in urban areas like Kanpur, where individuals exploit trust for personal gain. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and verify official identities before engaging in financial or personal matters. The arrest serves as a stern warning to potential offenders and a step towards ensuring justice for victims of such exploitative schemes.
