Kanpur Police Arrests Fugitive After Encounter

In a dramatic late-night operation, Kanpur police successfully apprehended a fugitive accused in a significant jewellery theft case following an encounter on Tuesday night. The arrested individual, identified as Vishal alias Kallu, was a key suspect wanted for his involvement in the theft of approximately 3 kilograms of silver jewellery from a showroom in Jarauli Phase-2.

Encounter Leads to Arrest of Wanted Accused

According to police officials, the arrest came after a tip-off led authorities to Banpurwa, where Vishal was reportedly sighted. A police team swiftly cordoned off the area to prevent his escape. When confronted by the officers and instructed to halt, the accused allegedly opened fire in a desperate attempt to flee the scene.

In the ensuing retaliatory action by the police, a bullet struck Vishal in his right leg, incapacitating him and allowing for his immediate arrest. He was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for necessary medical treatment. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) Deependra Nath Chaudhary confirmed that following a thorough medical examination, the accused would be formally sent to jail to face legal proceedings.

Details of the Jewellery Theft Case

The case dates back to the night of December 14, 2025, when three masked individuals forcibly broke the shutter of a showroom owned by Gaurav Verma in Jarauli Phase-2. The perpetrators made off with around 3 kilograms of silver jewellery, marking a substantial theft that prompted an intensive police investigation.

Utilising crucial evidence from CCTV footage, the police managed to crack the case on December 20, 2025. This led to the arrest of two accomplices: Vishal Gupta alias Mannu Bihari from Gujaini village and Karan from Mayapuram Kachchi Basti, Gujaini. Both individuals were subsequently sent to jail, but Vishal alias Kallu remained at large, evading capture.

Previous Escape and Re-arrest

Vishal alias Kallu, a resident of Shivaji Puliya in the Barra police station area, had been absconding since the initial arrests. He was initially apprehended by Gujaini police on the night of January 14, 2026, while allegedly planning to commit another crime. However, in a bold move on January 15, he managed to escape from police custody.

Police reports indicate that he pushed a homeguard on duty under the pretext of needing to use the bathroom, seizing the opportunity to flee the police station. This escape heightened the urgency of his recapture, leading to the intensified police efforts that culminated in the recent encounter and arrest.

The successful operation underscores the persistent efforts of Kanpur police in tackling serious crimes and ensuring that fugitives are brought to justice, thereby reinforcing public safety and law enforcement credibility in the region.
