Kanpur Police Commissioner Launches Major Crackdown on Fake Marksheet Racket

In a decisive move to combat academic fraud, Kanpur Police Commissioner Raghubir Lal has constituted a 14-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to thoroughly investigate a widespread fake marksheet case that has rocked the city. This action follows the initial arrest of four individuals by the Kidwai Nagar police, who were part of a criminal gang engaged in the illicit buying and selling of counterfeit marksheets and other fraudulent documents.

Comprehensive SIT Structure and Strategic Objectives

The newly formed SIT is organized into five specialized teams, each assigned distinct roles to dismantle the network of fraudsters. The team composition includes an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), three inspectors from the crime branch, six sub-inspectors, and three constables, ensuring a robust and multi-faceted approach to the investigation.

Key tasks allocated to the SIT teams encompass:

  • Verification of documents and degrees to confirm their authenticity.
  • Surveillance operations to monitor suspects and gather intelligence.
  • Apprehension of fugitives linked to the gang who are currently evading arrest.

Additionally, the investigation will extend to financial scrutiny, with teams examining bank accounts to trace illicit transactions. Authorities plan to question individuals who allegedly utilized the gang's services to obtain fake documents, aiming to uncover the full extent of this fraudulent scheme.

Proactive Measures and Legal Pursuits

In a bid to ensure thoroughness, the police team will visit relevant universities to cross-check the legitimacy of degrees against official records, preventing any potential misuse of falsified credentials. SIT chief Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Yogesh Kumar emphasized that efforts are underway to identify lawyers who facilitated the creation of these fake documents. One such lawyer, reportedly from the Babupurwa area, has already been flagged for involvement, and summons will be issued for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.

This crackdown highlights the Kanpur Police's commitment to upholding academic integrity and combating organized crime in the education sector.
