Kanyakumari Police Introduces 'FIR – Your Rights' Initiative to Bridge Gap with Public

In a significant move to foster transparency and build public confidence, the Kanyakumari district police launched a new initiative titled 'FIR – Your Rights' on Monday. The program was inaugurated by District Superintendent of Police R Stalin, who emphasized its role in reducing the longstanding gap between law enforcement agencies and the community.

Empowering Complainants with Immediate FIR Access

Addressing reporters during the launch event, SP R Stalin highlighted that Section 173(2) of the BNSS Act grants complainants the legal right to obtain a copy of the First Information Report (FIR) free of cost. Under this innovative initiative, a copy of the FIR for all cases registered across police stations in the district will be promptly provided to the complainants. This service will be facilitated either directly through the police station or via designated village-level police personnel appointed under the 'Oorkaval Kankanippu Thittam' scheme.

Enhancing Public Trust and Police Credibility

The primary objective of the 'FIR – Your Rights' initiative is to enhance public trust by ensuring complete transparency in the FIR registration process. By guaranteeing immediate access to FIR copies, the Kanyakumari district police aims to improve its image and credibility among citizens. SP Stalin stated that this step will effectively safeguard the legal rights of complainants, thereby fostering a more cooperative and trustworthy relationship between the police and the public.

Rigorous Monitoring Through Public Feedback Centre

To ensure the successful implementation and continuous improvement of the initiative, it will be closely monitored through the public feedback centre. This monitoring will be conducted under the direct supervision of Additional Superintendent of Police (Cyber Crime) M Nagashankar, ensuring that any issues or suggestions from the public are promptly addressed. This structured oversight mechanism underscores the police department's commitment to accountability and responsiveness in serving the community.

The launch of 'FIR – Your Rights' marks a proactive step by the Kanyakumari district police towards creating a more transparent and accessible law enforcement system, ultimately strengthening the bond between the police and the citizens they serve.
