Major Cyber Crime Operation in Kerala Nets 51 Devices and Multiple Arrests
In a significant crackdown on online child exploitation, law enforcement authorities in Kerala have seized a total of 51 electronic devices and arrested four individuals as part of a specialized anti-pornography initiative named 'Operation P-Hunt'. The coordinated raids targeted individuals actively searching for, collecting, and distributing child sexual abuse material across the internet.
Kochi City Police Action Leads to Three Arrests
Under the direct instructions of Kochi City Police Commissioner Kaliraj Mahesh Kumar, the cyber wing executed 36 targeted raids within city limits. This intensive operation resulted in the seizure of 22 electronic devices and the arrest of three suspects. The raids were strategically led by the Station House Officers (SHOs) of various police stations to maximize effectiveness.
Following the operations, separate cases were officially registered at the Maradu, Palarivattom, and Thrikkakara police stations. All accused individuals have been remanded to judicial custody as the investigations proceed. The police emphasized that this operation is a critical component of their ongoing efforts to combat the proliferation of illegal online content.
Ernakulam Rural Police Expand the Net
Simultaneously, the Ernakulam Rural Police conducted an extensive sweep across 46 different locations spanning five subdivisions. This branch of the operation was spearheaded by a dedicated special police team, leading to the confiscation of 29 devices, primarily mobile phones. Among those apprehended was a 19-year-old individual from Kuzhuppilly, highlighting the operation's reach across various age groups involved in such activities.
The primary objective of 'Operation P-Hunt' is to systematically identify and initiate stringent legal proceedings against individuals who engage in downloading, storing, and distributing child pornographic images and videos sourced from multiple illicit websites. Authorities have reiterated their zero-tolerance policy towards such cyber crimes.
Separate Action Under Kaapa Act
In a related development, a 45-year-old habitual offender identified as Yasar Arafat from Thoppumpady was placed under preventive detention under the stringent Kaapa Act on Friday. This action was initiated based on a comprehensive report filed by the City Police Deputy Commissioner, leading to the issuance of a formal Kaapa order by the District Collector.
Consequently, the individual has been transferred to the Viyyur Central Jail. The Kaapa Act, or the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act, is frequently invoked by authorities to detain repeat offenders and individuals deemed a persistent threat to public order, demonstrating the police's multi-faceted approach to maintaining law and order in the region.
