A 21-year-old Kerala student studying at a reputed private college in Bengaluru has alleged that a realtor attempted to rape her, and accused the police of questioning her character instead of taking the complaint seriously. The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with women's rights groups demanding a thorough investigation and action against the accused.
Incident Details
According to the victim's statement, the accused, a real estate agent in his mid-30s, befriended her through a common acquaintance. On the day of the incident, he invited her to an apartment under the pretext of discussing a part-time job opportunity. Once inside, he allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. The victim managed to escape and immediately filed a complaint at a nearby police station.
Allegations of Victim Blaming
However, instead of registering a case, the police reportedly questioned her about her lifestyle, asking why she was working part-time at a momos outlet and why she agreed to meet a stranger. The victim said she felt humiliated and re-traumatized by the police's attitude. Her family has alleged that the police are trying to shield the accused, who is reportedly well-connected.
Police Response
Bengaluru police have denied the allegations, stating that they have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter. However, the victim's lawyer has demanded a transfer of the case to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) or a women's police station to ensure a fair inquiry.
Outrage and Protests
Women's rights activists have condemned the police's approach, calling it a classic case of victim blaming. Protests have been held outside the police station, with demonstrators demanding the arrest of the accused and action against the officers involved. The victim has been provided with counseling and is under police protection.
Legal Action
The state's Women's Commission has taken suo motu cognizance of the matter and issued notices to the police commissioner. The commission has also directed the police to submit a detailed report within a week. Meanwhile, the accused realtor has gone absconding, and a manhunt has been launched.
The case has reignited debates about the safety of women in Bengaluru and the treatment of sexual assault survivors by law enforcement. The victim, who is also a part-time worker at a momos outlet, has shown immense courage in speaking out, and her family has appealed for justice.
