In a troubling repeat of events, an intern at Lucknow's prestigious King George's Medical University (KGMU) has been formally charged with sexual exploitation, mere days after a resident doctor from the same institution faced similar allegations. The Lucknow police have registered a case based on a complaint from a nursing student, marking the second such incident to rock the medical university within a week.
Details of the Allegations and Police Action
According to the official complaint filed at the Qaiserbagh Police Station, the KGMU intern is accused of sexually assaulting the victim for several months under the false pretext of marriage. The woman, who is pursuing a nursing course at a different institute in Lucknow and hails from another district, stated that she met the accused through a mutual friend. She alleged that after befriending her, the intern initiated a physical relationship with assurances of marriage.
The situation escalated when the victim began pressing for marriage, and the accused allegedly refused. Further compounding her ordeal, he then began harassing her by threatening to circulate her intimate photographs on social media platforms. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lucknow, Vishwajeet Srivastava, confirmed that an investigation into these serious allegations is currently underway. He stated that appropriate legal action will be taken based on the evidence gathered.
The police have outlined their next steps, which include recording the victim's formal statement before a magistrate. The accused intern will be summoned to the police station for detailed questioning as part of the investigative process.
University Administration Awaits Official Communication
When approached for comment, KGMU spokesperson Dr. K K Singh revealed that the university administration had not been officially informed about the case by the police at the time of inquiry. Dr. Singh clarified that since the complainant is not a student of KGMU, the university's direct involvement is contingent upon receiving official documents from the investigating authorities.
"The university administration will initiate action if the police officially send documents confirming the charges against the intern in the investigation," Dr. Singh told The Indian Express. This stance indicates that any internal disciplinary action by KGMU against the intern will follow the formal legal process.
A Pattern of Allegations Emerges
This case disturbingly echoes an incident from the previous week, where a KGMU resident doctor was booked on charges of sexually exploiting a colleague with a false promise of marriage and allegedly forcing her to convert. Following those allegations, the resident doctor was suspended by the university administration.
The back-to-back cases have cast a shadow over the renowned medical institution, raising concerns about the conduct of some individuals within its premises and the mechanisms for addressing such grievances. The Lucknow police's handling of both investigations is now under close scrutiny as they work to gather evidence and deliver justice.
