Kochi Police Arrest Three Young Men in Major Ganja Seizure Operation

In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, Kochi city police arrested three young men on Tuesday, seizing over 5 kilograms of ganja in the district. The operation marks yet another major drug bust in the area, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat narcotics trade.

Details of the Arrest and Seizure

The arrest occurred near Sahodaran Ayyappan Road in Kadavanthra, where police intercepted the suspects and confiscated the contraband. The individuals arrested have been identified as Gautham, aged 21, from Chemmanakary in Vaikom; Akshay Haridas, aged 22, from Kanjiramattom; and Anas Sunil, aged 22, from Chempu in Vaikom. In addition to the ganja, the vehicle used for transporting the drugs was also seized by authorities.

The operation was conducted by the Dansaf team under the leadership of T D Sunilkumar, the assistant commissioner of the narcotic cell. Police have initiated a detailed investigation to uncover the source of the contraband and its intended destination, aiming to dismantle broader drug networks operating in the region.

Recent Trends in Drug Seizures in Kochi

This incident is part of a larger pattern of increased drug seizures in Kochi over the past three months. Police have been actively targeting narcotics trafficking, resulting in multiple large-scale confiscations. However, a notable shift has been observed in the profiles of those arrested.

In previous cases, most of the accused were migrants from other states. For instance, on Monday, Ernakulam rural police arrested a native of West Bengal with 6.5 kilograms of ganja in Marampally. The drugs, intended for sale in the Aluva and Marampally areas, were seized from a bus stop near the Athani Airport signal junction. The suspect, identified as Babul, allegedly purchased the ganja in West Bengal, traveled by train to Coimbatore, and then took a bus to Athani.

Statistics on Ganja Seizures in the Region

The scale of drug seizures in Ernakulam district has been substantial this year. According to police reports, Ernakulam rural police have already seized close to one-third of the total ganja confiscated in 2025, within just the first few months of 2025. So far this year, authorities have seized approximately 190 kilograms of ganja, compared to a total seizure of 603 kilograms in the entire year of 2025.

This data underscores the intensified efforts by law enforcement to curb drug trafficking, with a focus on both local and interstate operations. The recent arrests of local residents, as opposed to migrants, suggest a possible evolution in trafficking patterns or increased vigilance by police in monitoring domestic networks.

As the investigation continues, police are working to trace the origins and distribution channels of the seized ganja, with the goal of preventing further drug-related activities in Kochi and surrounding areas.
