Kolhapur Police Arrest Nephew for Alleged Murder of Elderly Aunt
In a shocking development from Kolhapur, Maharashtra, local authorities have made a significant arrest in connection with the death of a 72-year-old woman. The Kolhapur police apprehended a 46-year-old man on Friday, accusing him of murdering his elderly aunt to steal her valuable gold jewellery.
Initial Investigation Suggested Natural Causes
The case began when Usha Maruti Bhiungade was discovered deceased in her Gangavesh apartment four days prior to the arrest. The 72-year-old widow had been living alone since her husband passed away in December of last year. Her nephew, identified as Parshuram, initially informed investigators that his aunt suffered from multiple health conditions and that he had visited her the night before her death to deliver necessary medications.
Given this information and the woman's known medical history, police initially found no immediate indications of foul play. The circumstances appeared consistent with a natural death, possibly related to her existing ailments.
Revelation of Poisoning and Theft
However, the investigation took a dramatic turn when detectives uncovered additional details about Parshuram's movements. Police learned that the nephew, who resides at Chintamani Park on Phulewadi Ring Road, had also visited his aunt on the morning she was found dead. This raised suspicions and prompted a more thorough examination of the evidence.
Further probing revealed a disturbing allegation: Parshuram had reportedly mixed a chemical substance commonly used for polishing jewellery into his aunt's tea. After consuming the contaminated beverage, the elderly woman suffered a fatal heart attack.
The investigation also uncovered that several valuable items were missing from the victim's residence. Her gold chain, earrings, and bangles could not be located, suggesting a possible motive for the crime.
Police Statement on Motive and Arrest
According to Inspector Sushant Chavan of the local crime branch, the evidence points to a calculated crime driven by financial gain. "Parshuram murdered his aunt to obtain quick money for personal enjoyment," Chavan stated, highlighting the alleged motive behind the tragic incident.
The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in a case that initially appeared to be a natural death. Police are continuing their investigation to gather additional evidence and determine the full extent of the crime.
