Kolkata Biker Assaults Cops, Snatches Equipment

In a shocking incident in Kolkata, a 32-year-old motorcyclist was detained and subsequently handed over to the Bowbazar Police on Thursday. The individual stands accused of assaulting two police officers who were on traffic duty and snatching government-issued equipment from them. The altercation took place at the bustling Ganesh Chandra Avenue-Nirmal Chandra Street crossing, a key intersection in the city.

Details of the Incident

According to a formal written complaint filed in the matter, the incident unfolded at precisely 12:22 pm. A home guard named Prabir Dey intercepted a west-bound motorcycle for an alleged traffic signal violation near the iconic Hind Cinema. The rider was later identified as Zeeshan Fahim Siddiquie, a resident of Titagarh.

Assault on Home Guard

The complainant, Sergeant Suman Chatterjee, detailed that upon being stopped, Siddiquie allegedly struck Home Guard Dey in the face. The assault did not stop there; the accused also damaged Dey's uniform and forcibly snatched a government-issued wireless manpack set from him. This equipment is crucial for police communication and operations.

Confrontation with Sergeant

Alerted by the commotion, Sergeant Chatterjee arrived at the scene to question the accused. However, the situation escalated further. Siddiquie reportedly grabbed Chatterjee by the collar of his uniform and used what has been described as "filthy and slang language" towards the officer. In a brazen act, he also snatched the sergeant's body camera, which is an essential tool for recording police interactions and ensuring accountability.

Police Response and Detention

The swift response from the police led to the immediate detention of Zeeshan Fahim Siddiquie. He was taken into custody and handed over to the Bowbazar Police for further investigation. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement personnel on duty, especially in high-traffic areas of Kolkata.

This case highlights the challenges faced by traffic police in maintaining order on the city's roads. The assault on officers and the theft of government equipment are serious offenses that underscore the need for enhanced security measures and public cooperation. The Bowbazar Police are expected to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served in this matter.
