Kolkata Police Launches Drive Against Illegal Auto Parking to Unclog Crossings
In a decisive move to tackle chronic traffic snarls, the Kolkata Police has issued a directive to all traffic guards across the city. The order mandates strict enforcement to ensure that auto-rickshaws parked illegally on roads do not obstruct the normal flow of traffic, particularly at busy intersections and crossings.
Proactive Measures Implemented at Key Locations
Over the past two days, police personnel from three traffic guards have already taken concrete action. At prominent locations like Kidderpore and Park Circus, auto stands have been physically shifted by several metres away from the actual crossings. This relocation aims to prevent these vehicles from clogging critical points where traffic merges and diverges.
"We identified illegal parking as the primary obstacle to maintaining smooth traffic movement at crossings, alongside issues like jaywalking. Our strategy is to address both problems comprehensively. Any auto operator attempting to pick up or drop passengers directly at crossings will face penalties," stated an officer from the Vidyasagar traffic guard.
Broader Traffic Management Initiatives Underway
Simultaneously, the Kolkata Police is coordinating with other civic bodies to enhance road infrastructure and safety. Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Crime) Rupesh Kumar has formally requested the Public Works Department (PWD) to undertake urgent repairs of damaged iron railings on the median boulevard beneath the DH Road metro viaduct. PWD officials have assured that the repair work will commence promptly.
Furthermore, to bolster long-term traffic management, Kumar has urged the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) to construct a permanent median divider equipped with iron railings along Circus Avenue. This initiative is expected to segregate traffic flows more effectively and reduce the risk of accidents.
The combined efforts of relocating auto stands, imposing fines on violators, and upgrading physical road dividers represent a multi-pronged approach by Kolkata Police. The objective is clear: to decongest the city's arteries, ensure safer pedestrian movement, and foster a more disciplined traffic environment for all commuters.
