Kolkata Grapples with Rising Incidents of Thefts and Snatchings
Residents of Kolkata are facing a concerning uptick in criminal activities, with multiple reports of thefts and snatchings emerging from south and central parts of the city. These incidents have targeted both pedestrians and parked vehicles, creating unease among locals.
Car Break-In at Eliot Park Area
A particularly distressing case involved a 46-year-old techie from Behala, who is employed with a multinational corporation. On Friday, January 30, he discovered that his car had been broken into while parked on the footpath in front of Eliot Park, opposite JL Nehru Road. The miscreants shattered the vehicle's rear-side glass to gain access.
The stolen items included a bag containing valuable gadgets and his employee identity card. The techie and his friends had left the car unattended during a morning walk, only to return to this unfortunate scene.
Mobile Phone Snatched on Rifle Range Road
In a separate incident, a resident of Broad Street filed a complaint with the Karaya Police Station. He alleged that his mobile phone was snatched a couple of days ago while he was walking towards Park Circus Station on Rifle Range Road at night. The perpetrators were two unidentified men on a bike, highlighting a pattern of opportunistic crimes targeting individuals in isolated areas.
Theft at South Kolkata Club
Adding to the list of crimes, a woman from Ballygunge Circular Road reported a theft at a south Kolkata club. She claimed that an unknown person stole Rs 10,000 and some jewellery from her niece's room. The incident occurred between December 23 and December 26, when her niece was staying at the club after arriving from Delhi.
These incidents underscore a growing trend of thefts and snatchings in Kolkata, prompting concerns about public safety. Authorities are urged to enhance vigilance and implement measures to curb such criminal activities in the city.
