Major Fire at Kozhikode Silk Showroom Results in Massive Financial Damage
A severe fire that broke out at the prominent Jayalakshmi Silks showroom in Kozhikode's Palayam area on Tuesday has led to an estimated financial loss of approximately Rs 50 crore. The incident, which engulfed large sections of the four-storey building, has prompted the Kozhikode town police to register a formal case based on a complaint submitted by the showroom manager.
Firefighting Efforts and Operational Challenges
The blaze erupted at the Kallayi Road location around 6:10 PM, triggering an extensive emergency response. Firefighters from multiple units across the district, along with a specialized tender from Calicut International Airport, were deployed to combat the flames. The operation faced significant hurdles due to the intermittent shattering of glass panes, which posed risks to personnel and hampered containment efforts.
By 7:30 PM, firefighting teams successfully managed to contain the flames on the building's exterior. However, it took nearly three hours of intense effort before the situation was fully brought under control. The fire was eventually subdued through a coordinated strategy of simultaneously spraying water from three fire engines, demonstrating the scale and complexity of the operation.
Inventory Loss and Investigation Status
The timing of the fire proved particularly devastating as the showroom had stocked large quantities of textiles in preparation for the upcoming festive seasons of Eid Al Fitr and Vishu. This seasonal inventory contributed substantially to the overall estimated loss of Rs 50 crore.
On Wednesday, fire and rescue services conducted a preliminary inspection of the gutted premises. Despite thorough examination, investigators could not determine the exact cause of the fire during this initial assessment. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to identify what triggered the destructive blaze that caused such significant property and inventory damage.
