Labourer Arrested in Delhi for Alleged Negligence in Biker's Fatal Accident
In a tragic incident that has sparked outrage and demands for accountability, a labourer has been arrested from Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh for allegedly failing to report a 25-year-old biker's fall into a 14-foot-deep pipeline pit in Delhi's Janakpuri area. The victim, identified as Kamal Dhyani, succumbed to his injuries after lying in the pit for nearly eight hours before police were alerted.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Arrest
According to police investigators, the accident occurred late on Thursday night when Dhyani's motorcycle fell into the freshly dug pit. An eyewitness, Vipin Singh, reportedly saw the incident and alerted a security guard at a nearby residential complex. The guard then informed labourer Yogesh (23), who was present at the site.
Police records indicate that Yogesh reached the spot and saw Dhyani lying injured with the motorcycle's headlight still illuminated. At approximately 12:22 AM, Yogesh called his supervisor, sub-contractor Rajesh Kumar Prajapati, who arrived at the location within 15-20 minutes from his Tri Nagar residence. Despite both individuals seeing the injured biker, neither alerted authorities or arranged for rescue operations.
Dhyani remained in the pit until around 8:03 AM when a woman passing by while dropping her son to school noticed the situation. According to her family, she initially informed a security guard who paid no attention. When bystanders hesitated to contact police, she dialed the Police Control Room herself.
Police Investigation and Arrests
Police have arrested both Yogesh and Prajapati in connection with the case. Prajapati was taken into custody on Saturday and remanded to police custody for one day. Investigators are examining phone records that show Prajapati made 2-3 calls on the night of the incident, and those he contacted will be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.
The investigation has revealed that the pit had been freshly dug just one day before the accident. While another older excavation nearby was familiar to regular commuters, this new pit allegedly lacked proper barricading and safety measures. Police are questioning security guards to establish the complete sequence of events and plan to examine the main contractor who hired Prajapati.
Public Outcry and Political Response
The tragic incident has prompted public demonstrations demanding accountability for the safety lapse. A candlelight march was organized to mourn Dhyani's death and call for improved safety measures at construction sites across Delhi.
According to a PTI report, AAP's Delhi unit chief Saurabh Bharadwaj was briefly detained by police while attempting to stage a protest related to the incident. The political response highlights growing concerns about infrastructure safety and emergency response protocols in the city.
The case continues to develop as investigators work to determine the full extent of responsibility for both the inadequate safety measures at the construction site and the delayed emergency response that may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
