Daily Labourer Arrested in Ganjam for Alleged Murder of Wife, Dowry Harassment Claims Surface

In a tragic incident from Ganjam district, a 30-year-old daily labourer was arrested on Thursday for the alleged murder of his wife in Jakarapalli. The arrest follows a police investigation into the death of Sandhyarani Bisoi, a 23-year-old mother of a four-year-old son, which occurred on Wednesday.

Initial Suicide Claim Debunked by Family Allegations

The accused, identified as Ajit Bisoi, initially told authorities that his wife had committed suicide by consuming poison. However, this narrative was quickly challenged when Sandhyarani's mother, Sabita Swain, filed a First Information Report (FIR) at the Digapahandi police station on Wednesday. In her complaint, Sabita, a resident of Lathi, alleged that her daughter was killed by her in-laws and that they were attempting to disguise the crime as a suicide.

Sabita Swain stated, "Sandhyarani's in-laws started mentally and physically torturing her for the past two years and demanded more dowry." She further explained that during the couple's marriage in 2021, her family had provided cash and various household articles as dowry, but the harassment persisted, escalating to fatal violence.

Police Investigation and Post-Mortem Details

Prasant Kumar Patra, the inspector in-charge of Digapahandi police station, provided updates on the case. "Post-mortem examination was conducted at MKCG Medical College. The exact cause of her death would be ascertained only after getting the autopsy report," he said. This statement highlights the ongoing forensic efforts to determine the precise circumstances surrounding Sandhyarani's death.

While Ajit Bisoi has been taken into custody, police reports indicate that his in-laws, including his father, mother, and brothers, are currently evading arrest. Authorities have launched a search operation to apprehend them, underscoring the seriousness of the allegations and the broader family involvement suspected in this case.

Broader Implications and Community Impact

This incident sheds light on the persistent issue of dowry-related harassment and domestic violence in the region. The arrest and ongoing manhunt reflect law enforcement's commitment to addressing such crimes, but they also raise concerns about the safety and rights of women in similar situations.

  • The victim, Sandhyarani Bisoi, was a young mother, leaving behind a four-year-old son.
  • Her family's allegations point to a pattern of abuse linked to dowry demands, a problem that continues to plague many communities.
  • The police are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death, which will be crucial for the legal proceedings.

As the investigation progresses, this case serves as a stark reminder of the need for vigilance and support systems to combat domestic violence and dowry harassment, ensuring justice for victims like Sandhyarani.
