Lucknow Police Intensifies Crackdown on Banned Chinese Manjha After Recent Death and Injuries

In response to a recent fatality and multiple injuries attributed to the use of Chinese manjha, the Lucknow Police Commissionerate's West Zone has significantly escalated its enforcement efforts. On Thursday, authorities engaged directly with traders and residents in the old city to address this critical public safety issue.

Special Awareness Meeting Convened at Chowk Police Station

A crucial awareness and coordination meeting was organized at the Chowk police station under the leadership of Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vishwajeet Srivastava. This gathering brought together a diverse group of stakeholders, including kite-string wholesalers, retailers, representatives from traders' associations, members of kite-flying groups, and local residents. The primary objective was to collaboratively curb the sale and use of the hazardous synthetic string.

DCP Srivastava Reiterates Strict Ban and Legal Consequences

DCP Vishwajeet Srivastava firmly reiterated that Chinese manjha, a synthetic, glass-coated kite string, is strictly prohibited under a government order dated February 9. He emphasized that any involvement in the manufacture, sale, storage, or use of this banned string will result in stringent legal action. "Shauq ke badle shok nahin (Do not turn a hobby into someone else's grief)," Srivastava stated, underscoring that recreational activities should never compromise human life or animal safety.

Public Safety Takes Precedence Over Festive Enthusiasm

The DCP highlighted the severe dangers posed by Chinese manjha, noting that in recent years, the razor-sharp string has caused numerous throat injuries to motorcyclists and pedestrians. Additionally, it has led to large-scale bird fatalities, raising significant environmental and ethical concerns. "Public safety must take precedence over festive enthusiasm," Srivastava added, reinforcing the urgency of the crackdown.

Collective Pledge and Voluntary Compliance from Community

During the meeting, traders and residents collectively pledged not to deal in or use the banned manjha. They assured authorities that only plain cotton thread would be promoted in local markets to ensure safer kite-flying practices. In a positive development, some parents voluntarily surrendered manjha strings and charkhis (kite-flying reels) found in their children's possession, demonstrating community support for the initiative.

This intensified crackdown reflects the Lucknow Police's commitment to preventing further tragedies and promoting responsible behavior during festive seasons. The proactive engagement with stakeholders aims to foster long-term compliance and awareness, ensuring that hobbies like kite-flying do not result in preventable harm.
