Coimbatore Man Arrested for Brutally Assaulting Mother Over Liquor Money
In a shocking incident of domestic violence, a 43-year-old man was arrested in Coimbatore on Friday for assaulting his elderly mother with a wooden log at their residence near Vadavalli. The assault occurred on Thursday night following a dispute over money for alcohol.
Details of the Assault and Arrest
The Vadavalli police identified the arrested individual as C Karuppusamy, a resident of Kalveerampalayam. According to police reports, Karuppusamy, described as a habitual drunkard, regularly demanded money from his 68-year-old mother, C Marugathal, to purchase liquor.
Marugathal, who works as a daily wage laborer, had been unwell for the past week and was unable to go to work. On Thursday night, Karuppusamy returned home in an intoxicated state and once again demanded money from his mother to buy more alcohol. When Marugathal refused, citing her illness and lack of income, Karuppusamy became enraged.
The situation quickly escalated into a heated verbal argument. In a fit of anger, Karuppusamy grabbed a log and launched a vicious, indiscriminate attack on his mother. The assault resulted in serious injuries to Marugathal's hands and hip.
Neighbor Intervention and Medical Treatment
Hearing Marugathal's screams for help, neighbors rushed to the scene and intervened, rescuing her from further harm. She was immediately taken to a private hospital near Vadavalli, where she was admitted for treatment of her injuries.
On Friday, after receiving medical care, Marugathal filed a formal complaint with the Vadavalli police. The police swiftly registered a case against Karuppusamy under multiple legal provisions.
Legal Charges and Judicial Proceedings
The charges against Karuppusamy include:
- Sections 296(b), 115(2), 118(1), and 351(3) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita
- Section 4 of the Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women (Amendment) Act
Following his arrest, Karuppusamy was produced before a judicial magistrate. He has been remanded to judicial custody and is currently lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison, awaiting further legal proceedings.
This distressing case highlights the severe consequences of alcohol abuse and domestic violence, underscoring the urgent need for community awareness and support systems to protect vulnerable individuals, especially the elderly, from such brutal acts.
