A 23-year-old man was arrested on Saturday for allegedly stabbing his estranged girlfriend to death in Kamrup (Metropolitan) district, Guwahati. The victim, aged 18, was found dead in a paddy field on Friday, prompting locals to inform the police. The accused, identified as Mallik, fled the scene but was apprehended within 12 hours.
Arrest and Remand
The accused was produced before a court and granted a three-day police remand. He was arrested under Section 103(1) of the BNS Act, according to Tanmoy Nath, officer-in-charge of the local police station.
Background of the Relationship
Police investigations revealed a troubled history between the duo. During interrogation, Mallik confessed that he had been in a relationship with the victim last year, during which she became pregnant. When her parents discovered the pregnancy, they filed a case against him at Khetri Police Station. He was subsequently arrested on rape charges under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, convicted by a court, and sentenced to jail. He was released on bail approximately two months ago.
Events Leading to the Murder
After his release, Mallik reportedly attempted to meet the victim to rekindle their relationship. However, upon learning that she was involved with another person, he stabbed her multiple times, leading to her death. While being taken to court, Mallik spoke to local media and confessed to the killing.
Legal Proceedings
The police have secured a remand for further interrogation. The case is being investigated under relevant sections of the law, and the accused remains in custody.
