Gurgaon Police Nab Suspect in Highway Robbery Disguised as Right-Wing Activists

In a significant breakthrough, Gurgaon police have arrested a man in connection with a disturbing robbery and assault incident that occurred on the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway. The crime involved assailants who allegedly posed as members of a right-wing organization to target vulnerable travelers.

Details of the Expressway Attack

The incident took place in the early hours of January 23 within the jurisdiction of the Ferozepur Jhirka Sadar police station. According to police reports, the victims—identified as Raju, a Delhi resident, and his companion Dilshad—were traveling from Delhi to Madhya Pradesh with medical supplies when their vehicle broke down near channel number 73, ahead of the Ghata Shamsabad toll plaza, around 2 am.

Despite their efforts to seek help by contacting the highway helpline number and Tata Motors for assistance, no help arrived, leaving them stranded in a precarious situation.

Modus Operandi of the Assailants

While waiting for assistance, a Bolero Camper vehicle stopped near their stranded car, and four to five men emerged. The assailants proceeded to assault both men physically and robbed them of their mobile phones along with Rs 17,000 in cash. In a further escalation, they forced a UPI transfer of Rs 5,000 after coercively obtaining the PIN from one of the victims.

Police Investigation and Arrest

Following the registration of an FIR, police teams swiftly moved into action by:

  • Inspecting the crime scene thoroughly
  • Recording detailed statements from the victims
  • Initiating a comprehensive technical investigation

Through meticulous analysis of CCTV footage and toll plaza entry-exit records, investigators successfully tracked the movement of the vehicle used in the crime. The investigation led them to Faiz Mohammad, a resident of Deeg in Rajasthan, whose involvement was further corroborated through examination of call detail records.

Recovery of Evidence

During the arrest operation, police recovered crucial evidence including:

  1. A mobile phone linked to the crime
  2. Two SIM cards
  3. Rs 170 in cash
  4. A wristwatch believed to belong to the victims

The Bolero Camper vehicle used in the commission of the crime has also been seized by authorities as part of the ongoing investigation.

Broader Implications

This case highlights growing concerns about highway safety and security measures on major expressways like the Delhi-Mumbai corridor. The incident underscores the vulnerability of travelers during breakdown situations and raises questions about the responsiveness of emergency helpline services.

Police officials have emphasized their commitment to ensuring thorough investigation and appropriate legal action against all individuals involved in this criminal act that disrupted the journey of innocent citizens transporting essential medical supplies.
